Jiaxing port ships first biojet fuel cargo to overseas markets

  • Zhejiang accelerates rollout of waste-to-fuel industrial capacity under China’s ‘dual carbon’ goals

About 7,300 tons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) produced from waste oils set sail from Jiaxing Port on Sunday, marking the port’s first seaborne export of biojet fuel and adding a new category to China’s growing green fuel export list.

The shipment, produced by Blue Whale Bioenergy (Zhejiang) Co., was derived from used cooking oil and animal fats, which were processed through hydrogenation and isomerization to produce aviation-grade fuel.

The company describes the process as a “waste-to-value” transformation, turning discarded feedstock into low-carbon energy.

The cargo is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 21,900 tons compared with conventional jet fuel, while generating roughly $15 million in export value.

The project has been designated both a national demonstration program for green and low-carbon technologies and a major industrial project in Zhejiang province.

While the destination of the shipment was not disclosed, the export underscores Jiaxing’s efforts to scale up low-carbon logistics under China’s broader dual-carbon strategy, which aims to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.

The latest shipment highlights China’s accelerating push to commercialize alternative aviation fuels, as industrial-scale production and export channels begin to take shape along its eastern coastline.

It also marks the latest in a series of overseas shipments by Blue Whale Bioenergy, which has been steadily expanding exports of waste-oil-derived fuels this year.

Earlier shipments included 12,600 tons of hydro-treated bio-based diesel on January 31 and an additional 5,000-ton batch in February, all exported through Jiaxing Port.

With Sunday’s SAF cargo, total biofuel shipments handled by Jiaxing Maritime Safety Administration this year have reached at least six voyages and more than 50,000 tons of product, Chinese media reported.

Zhejiang province has been positioning “bio-manufacturing” as a strategic emerging industry in its 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), with multiple large-scale projects under development.

These include a 300,000-ton-per-year SAF facility in Zhoushan scheduled for commissioning in July 2026, and a biofuel project in Jiaxing expected to begin trial production in early 2026.
