Ningbo NEV exports jump 148% in April as Brazil demand spikes

  • New-energy vehicles accounted for more than 80% of car exports through Ningbo port
  • Brazil, Jordan and Southeast Asia emerged as key overseas markets

Exports of new-energy vehicles (NEVs) through the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port surged in April, underscoring how Chinese automakers are accelerating overseas expansion amid rising demand from emerging markets.

According to customs data released by Ningbo Customs on May 19, NEV exports through the port reached 4.37 billion yuan ($642 million) in April, up 148.1% from a year earlier.

Export volume climbed 138.2% to 41,000 units. Compared with March, export value and volume roughly doubled.

Total automobile exports through the port reached 5.27 billion yuan during the month, with electric and hybrid vehicles accounting for 82.9% of the total.

Brazil was the largest overseas market for Ningbo’s NEV exports in April, with shipments valued at 2.92 billion yuan, up 361.6% year on year.

Jordan and Southeast Asia followed, with exports to both markets reaching 260 billion yuan.

In the first four months of 2026, automobile exports through the port totaled 169,000 vehicles worth 17.33 billion yuan, up 49.6% and 52.1%, respectively.

NEV exports reached 123,000 units valued at 13.89 billion yuan, marking increases of 76.05% and 79.2%.

The strong growth reflects broader overseas expansion efforts by Zhejiang automakers such as Geely Holding Group, which have increasingly shifted from simple vehicle exports toward technology licensing and localized manufacturing abroad.

The export boom has also been underpinned by the extensive shipping network and customs infrastructure at Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, the world’s busiest cargo port by throughput.
