Amap expands chauffeured rides to 23 overseas destinations

  • Mapping platform extends chartered car service abroad with Chinese-language booking, local Chinese-speaking drivers and service guarantees
  • The launch reflects China’s booming outbound travel market and intensifying competition among travel platforms to export localized mobility services

Alibaba’s mapping and mobility affiliate Amap (高德) has launched its overseas chauffeured car service across 23 popular travel destinations, including Singapore, Thailand, Australia and South Korea, marking the first international expansion of the service after its domestic debut.

The service allows users to book entirely in Chinese through the Amap app without downloading additional software.

Travelers can request Chinese-speaking local drivers, customize itineraries, book by the day and store luggage in the vehicle, targeting families and independent travelers seeking flexible, in-depth trips.

To reassure users, Amap has introduced compensation guarantees for overseas bookings. Customers receive a full refund plus compensation equal to the booking amount if a driver fails to arrive, while late arrivals are compensated on a per-minute basis.

The new offering completes Amap’s overseas mobility ecosystem alongside its ride-hailing and airport transfer services, enabling travelers to arrange transportation from airport pickup to city rides and full-day private charters within a single platform.

Recovering outbound tourism

The launch comes as China’s outbound tourism continues to recover. China’s immigration authorities recorded 369 million cross-border trips in the first half of 2026, up 10.8% year on year, including 176 million by mainland residents, creating growing demand for Chinese-language travel services abroad.

Competition among domestic players is intensifying across different business models.

Ride-hailing platform Didi has expanded internationally by acquiring local ride-hailing operators across Latin America, while online travel agency Trip.com integrates transportation with its travel booking ecosystem.

Amap is betting on localization, offering a fully Chinese interface, integrated Alipay and WeChat Pay support, built-in translation and 24/7 Chinese customer service to eliminate common pain points for Chinese travelers.

Rather than exporting ride-hailing alone, Amap is exporting a standardized Chinese travel experience built around navigation, payments and local tourism partnerships as independent travel becomes increasingly popular.

What it means for global audiences

Amap’s overseas expansion illustrates how Chinese internet companies are increasingly exporting service ecosystems, not just apps.

As more Chinese travelers finalize transportation before departure, destinations and tourism operators may need to integrate more closely with Chinese digital platforms to capture spending.

The company also noted that the English-language version of Amap now supports ride-hailing and accepts mobile numbers from 65 countries and regions, extending its services to international visitors traveling within China.
