Zhipu AI opens institute in Hangzhou, partners with Zhejiang University

Zhipu AI (智谱) has officially opened an innovation institute in Hangzhou, deepening its presence in the Yangtze River Delta as the Chinese AI company expands from commercial operations into frontier research.

The Zhipu Innovation Institute was inaugurated on August 12 at the Hanggang Technology Building in Hangzhou’s Shangcheng District.

The move follows the establishment of Zhipu’s Zhejiang headquarters in the city in 2025 and marks a shift in its local strategy from capital and commercial applications toward fundamental research and industrial innovation.

The institute will focus on frontier areas of artificial general intelligence (AGI), including foundational large-model capabilities, AI agents and AI programming.

Four broad areas

On the day of its inauguration, the institute signed an agreement with Zhejiang University to launch six joint laboratory projects led by Zhejiang University professors.

The projects will focus on four broad areas: brain-inspired computing and cognitive computing, agents and complex decision-making, multimodal perception and content generation, and brain-computer interfaces and neural decoding.

The partnership is designed to push AI research beyond model performance toward fundamental theory, core technologies and interdisciplinary applications.

The Hanggang Technology Building, where the institute is based, has 49,000 square meters of space and already houses 30 AI companies with combined annual revenue exceeding 1.5 billion yuan.

Broader expansion in Hangzhou

The new institute is part of a broader expansion by Zhipu in Hangzhou. In July, the company established Zhipu Token Application Research Institute, with registered capital of 20 million yuan and indirect wholly owned status.

The two institutes serve different purposes: The token institute focuses on integrated AI technology and application development, while the innovation institute targets upstream technological breakthroughs.

Together, they form a two-track strategy combining research and commercialization.

For Shangcheng, Zhipu’s arrival also fills a gap in the district’s AI ecosystem. Companies such as Manycore Tech (群核科技) and Style3D (凌迪科技) have primarily focused on industrial and design-specific AI models, while Zhipu brings a general-purpose large-model research capability to the district.

From Beijing to the Yangtze River Delta

Zhipu’s expanding Hangzhou presence reflects a broader trend among China’s leading AI companies: building research, talent and commercial ecosystems outside Beijing.

Within roughly a year, Zhipu has moved through three stages in Hangzhou—from strategic investment and regional operations to a local headquarters and now a dedicated frontier research institute.

For international observers, the development offers a window into how Chinese foundation-model companies are building a second growth base in the Yangtze River Delta.

Hangzhou brings a combination of AI talent, computing infrastructure, data resources, capital and real-world application scenarios, while Zhipu contributes foundation-model technology, agent capabilities and its growing open-source presence.

The partnership with Zhejiang University suggests that the next phase of competition may extend beyond larger models and commercial applications into deeper collaboration between AI companies, universities and regional innovation ecosystems.
