- New 300-mu campus will bring engineering and life sciences closer to Hangzhou’s high-tech ecosystem

China’s Ministry of Education has approved the first phase of Zhejiang University‘s Liangzhu Campus (良渚校区) in Hangzhou, adding a new academic hub to one of the city’s most concentrated technology and research clusters.
The project, located in the Xizhan New City section of Hangzhou’s West City Science and Technology Innovation Corridor (杭州城西科创大走廊), will cover about 300 mu, or roughly 20 hectares.
Construction is expected to take about 37 months, with completion scheduled for June 2029.
Raising the budget
Total approved investment stands at 2.407 billion yuan ($3.6 billion), up from an earlier estimate of 2.109 billion yuan as the project moved from preliminary planning to a detailed construction plan.
The new campus will be part of Zhejiang University’s existing Zijingang Campus (紫金港校区), rather than a separate university campus.
Zhejiang University’s Polytechnic Institute of Zhejiang University (浙江大学工程师学院), together with its College of Life Sciences (浙江大学生命学院), are expected to be among the first institutions to move in.
The campus will be organized into five major areas: two research and technology-transfer centers, an education and exchange center, a future learning center and a student residential community.
Nearly 1 billion yuan will be invested in the two research and technology-transfer centers, underscoring the project’s emphasis on connecting academic research with commercial applications.

A new research cluster
The campus is located less than 3 kilometers from Westlake University‘s Yungu Campus and is surrounded by the Zijingang Science and Technology City, Future Sci-Tech City, the Zhejiang Lab and Alibaba’s DAMO Academy.
Its location effectively adds another major research institution to an already dense concentration of universities, laboratories and technology companies.
The emerging cluster brings together different stages of the innovation pipeline. Westlake University is focused heavily on fundamental research, while Zhejiang University is positioning its new campus around engineering talent, life sciences and technology commercialization.
Why it matters globally
For international observers, the development offers a glimpse into how Hangzhou is attempting to build innovation ecosystems through geographic concentration, rather than simply establishing isolated universities or research parks.
With Zhejiang University and Westlake University becoming physical neighbors, competition and collaboration over research funding, talent and students will inevitably become part of the dynamic.
The longer-term question is whether putting fundamental research, applied engineering and technology commercialization within a few kilometers of one another can generate an innovation ecosystem more powerful than any individual institution could build alone.
