- An Conghui takes the chair as Geely moves toward a more professional management structure
- The transition marks a shift from founder-driven growth to system-driven governance
On August 17, Geely Auto announced a major management reshuffle. Effective August 18, founder Li Shufu (李书福) stepped down as chairman and executive director, becoming honorary lifetime chairman.
An Conghui (安聪慧) was appointed chairman, while Gan Jiayue (淦家阅) became CEO.
The transition is notable because An is no outsider. He joined Geely as a junior technician in 1996 and has spent nearly three decades rising through the company.
His appointment represents an internal succession rather than a handover to an external professional manager.
Exerting his influence
Li, meanwhile, is not leaving Geely. He remains a major and controlling shareholder of Geely Auto and chairman of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group.
His departure is therefore from the listed company’s boardroom, not from strategic control of the broader group.
The reshuffle comes as Geely pushes its “One Geely” strategy, seeking to bring its sprawling portfolio of brands and businesses into greater alignment and reduce duplicated investment. The goal is to share technology, supply chains and distribution more efficiently.
The new governance structure also draws a clearer line between ownership, the board and day-to-day management. An will connect group resources with the listed company, while Gan will take direct responsibility for operating performance.
‘One Geely’ strategy
Geely vice chairman Gui Shengyue (桂生悦) described the transition as the company moving from a founder-driven entrepreneurial phase toward a more mature system- and team-driven organization.
For the global auto industry, the significance goes beyond one executive reshuffle.
Geely, which sells nearly two million vehicles a year and controls brands including Geely, Lynk & Co, Zeekr, Volvo and Lotus, is testing whether one of China’s largest private automakers can institutionalize its governance without losing the entrepreneurial drive that built it.
The real test for the succession will be whether “One Geely” can deliver more than the founder alone could.
