- The Shanghai startup topped both the gold-medal and overall medal standings with mass-produced robots
- Its performance adds to the evidence that the industry is shifting from flashy demonstrations toward production-ready machines
Shanghai-based humanoid robotics company AgiBot (智元机器人) made a strong debut at the second World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, winning 18 gold, 16 silver and 12 bronze medals to top both the gold-medal and overall standings.
The event, which concluded August 26 at the National Speed Skating Oval, brought together teams from across the rapidly developing humanoid robotics industry.

AgiBot’s 46 medals put it ahead of Tiangong (天工机器人), Unitree, Booster Robotics (加速进化) and Galbot (银河通用).
AgiBot entered robots including its OmniHand dexterous hand, Genie G2, Expedition A3 and Lingxi X2.
Production models shine
The company said all of the machines were mass-production models rather than robots specially built or modified for the competition.

OmniHand was particularly dominant in the dexterous-hand events, winning seven of eight gold medals through AgiBot subsidiary Agilink (临界点).
The 510-gram hand has 16 degrees of freedom and performed strongly in challenges including block assembly, powder weighing and unpacking.
Unitree, meanwhile, finished third with three gold, four silver and three bronze medals.
Unitree faces scrutiny
Its relatively modest medal haul, however, did not necessarily reflect weaker technology. The company said it had prioritized development and delivery of mass-produced robots and reduced the number of events it entered because of limited availability of new models and testing resources.
Some Unitree robots that appeared at the games were also reportedly modified by customers or partners using the company’s platforms.
The result also came as Unitree’s market value had fallen by nearly half from its peak of a little less than 445 billion yuan following its Shanghai listing on August 19, to around 230 billion yuan as of August 28.
Some market observers suggested that the company’s decision to scale back its participation may also have reflected a desire to limit the risk of a weak showing drawing further scrutiny to its valuation and weighing on its stock.
The contrast highlights a growing tension in China’s humanoid robotics sector.

Growing tension
As companies move toward commercialization, major competitions can serve as public demonstrations of technical capability.
Nonetheless, preparing extensively for them can also divert resources from product development, manufacturing and customer delivery.
For AgiBot, the results offer a useful showcase of its engineering approach. Winning with production models rather than competition-specific prototypes suggests that capabilities demonstrated on the field can potentially be reproduced in commercial deployments.
The timing is also significant for investors. AgiBot confirmed in July that it had begun preparations for a Hong Kong listing, with cornerstone investors valuing the company at roughly 36.3 billion yuan to 43.3 billion yuan.
That remains below Unitree’s valuation of about 61 billion yuan when it priced its Shanghai IPO.

The competition therefore gives AgiBot another metric with which to position itself against Unitree and other leading Chinese humanoid companies, although medals alone are unlikely to determine their long-term valuations.
The bigger question for the industry is whether competitive performance can translate into reliable work in factories, stores and other commercial settings.
