Unitree, the first humanoid robot company to list on the A-share market, plans to give annual grants to a group of young technology enthusiasts, betting that a small amount of early funding can help produce the next generation of engineers and entrepreneurs.
The Hangzhou-based robotics maker said August 27 that it will provide grants of 10,000 yuan to 20,000 yuan ($1,488-$2,976) to students from high school through the final year of a master’s degree.
Exceptional projects may receive more, while applicants can pursue projects in virtually any technology field, including chip manufacturing, artificial general intelligence, microrobotics and controlled nuclear fusion.
The program is open to students passionate about technology, regardless of their chosen field, with applications accepted at Genius@unitree.com.
The initiative has a personal connection to Unitree founder Wang Xingxing. The company said Wang received about 10,000 yuan under Zhejiang Province’s “Xinmiao” — literally young seedling — student innovation program during his freshman and sophomore years at university.
He used the funding to develop a haptic glove with force feedback and immersive interaction capabilities.

That grant, Unitree said, was in some sense Wang’s first significant source of startup funding and helped support his earliest technology work.
More than a decade later, Wang has turned that early experiment into Unitree, one of China’s most prominent robotics companies.
The company’s recent listing on the Shanghai Stock Exchange’s Star Market gave it a market value of more than 200 billion yuan as of August 28.
An early bet on undiscovered talent
Unitree’s approach differs sharply from the talent programs run by China’s technology giants.
Huawei’s “Prodigious Youth” (天才少年) program, launched in 2019 at the initiative of founder Ren Zhengfei (任正非), has focused on recruiting exceptional researchers, including PhD graduates, with compensation packages reportedly reaching as high as 2.01 million yuan a year.
Unitree is targeting a much earlier stage. Rather than compete for established researchers with high salaries, it is offering relatively modest grants to students who may not yet have a track record.
The company has also deliberately left the scope of eligible projects open-ended. Its announcement encourages students to pursue ambitious ideas rather than restricting them to robotics or technologies directly related to Unitree’s business.
That makes the program resemble an early-stage technology grant or angel investment more than a conventional corporate recruitment scheme.
Wang said he once relied on pocket money and leftover materials to experiment with technology as a child and understands the importance of having even a small amount of startup funding for young people interested in science and engineering.

Extending Unitree’s global talent strategy
The initiative also builds on Unitree’s efforts to expand its international talent base.
In March, the company launched a global embodied-intelligence recruitment program targeting the world’s top 200 universities and said it planned to establish overseas research centers within three years.
Core positions were advertised with monthly salaries of 40,000-70,000 yuan.
The new sponsorship program reaches further down the talent pipeline, potentially giving Unitree relationships with promising researchers years before they enter the job market.
For the global technology ecosystem, the program offers a different model for nurturing young talent. The financial commitment is small, but the unrestricted project scope gives students considerable freedom to experiment.
For Unitree, it could also become a long-term talent pipeline. The company is effectively looking beyond the engineers it can hire today and investing in students who could become the researchers, founders and technology leaders of tomorrow.
In that sense, Wang’s decision to fund young innovators is more than a philanthropic gesture. It is also a bet that somewhere among those students may be another version of the young engineer who once turned a 10,000-yuan grant into the beginnings of a robotics company.
