Leapmotor’s million-car race is a sprint it cannot afford to lose

  • August sales topped 100,000 for a second month, but Leapmotor still needs to average 110,000 vehicles a month through year-end to hit its target
  • With overseas localization still years from adding meaningful volume, the company is counting on its domestic operation to carry the final push

Leapmotor delivered 103,129 vehicles in August, its second straight month above 100,000 and an 80.7% increase from a year earlier.

On the surface, it is the kind of number that calls for a celebration. Put against the company’s 1 million-vehicle sales target for 2026, however, it looks more like a countdown.

Leapmotor has sold about 560,900 vehicles in the first eight months. To reach 1 million, it needs to deliver more than 439,000 units in the final four months — an average of roughly 110,000 a month.

That extra 10,000 vehicles above its recent 100,000-plus monthly run rate is significant. Now it is the monthly number Leapmotor needs simply to stay on track.

‘No Plan B’

Overseas sales are expected to provide some of the additional momentum. Leapmotor exported nearly 100,000 vehicles in the first half, up 372.6% year on year, as its partnership with Stellantis moves from strategy to production.

The C10 has begun rolling off the production lines in Malaysia. A factory in Spain has been converted for Leapmotor production. And the company plans to use an existing Stellantis plant in Brazil for localized production in South America.

But localization will not provide much volume this year. According to Leapmotor, overseas plants are expected to produce only about 50,000 vehicles next year, leaving the EV maker largely dependent on cars made in China and shipped abroad to meet its 150,000-to-200,000 export target for 2026.

That approach can put pressure on margins, but the volume matters more right now.

Zhu Jiangming

Inside the company, there is little appetite for retreat. Founder Zhu Jiangming (朱江明) has been blunt: “There is no Plan B.”

This signals a resolve to burn all bridges to get things done, but the statement is less about bravado than arithmetic.

Once a company publicly commits to 1 million vehicles, every month becomes a test of whether its production, supply chain, dealerships and delivery network can absorb the required pace.

Every model has a job

Leapmotor is trying to widen its product coverage at the same time. Its A, B, C and D series are designed to span roughly 60,000 yuan to 300,000 yuan, giving the company a broader addressable market.

The D series is particularly important. Its flagship D19 SUV and D99 MPV, priced at roughly 220,000 yuan ($32,783) to 320,000 yuan, are expected to do more than add volume. They are part of Leapmotor’s attempt to move the brand upmarket.

That creates a difficult balancing act. The company needs mass-market models to generate the numbers while new products must broaden the brand without slowing production or stretching the organization too far.

Four months that matter

Can Leapmotor sell another 439,000 vehicles in four months?

Purely on the numbers, it is extremely difficult. The company would need to sustain a monthly pace above 110,000 while avoiding serious disruptions in production, components, logistics, dealerships and deliveries. And the market still has to absorb all those vehicles.

But Leapmotor has already committed to the target. The real question is whether the pressure can force the entire system to operate at a higher level rather than break under it.

That is why the next four months will be about more than monthly sales. Every factory shift, shipment, dealer order and vehicle delivered will show whether Leapmotor’s rapidly expanding system can keep up with the ambition.

One million vehicles is not the finish line. It is an entry ticket in an increasingly unforgiving Chinese auto market.

Leapmotor does not just need to show that it can reach the target. It has spent the year telling investors and customers that it must.
