The Global Open-source AI Challenge (GOAI), an international competition focused on open-source AI projects, will bring 70 finalist teams from around the world to Hangzhou this month, as the city seeks to deepen ties between China’s AI industry and the global open-source developer community.
The 70 teams, selected from 2,999 qualifying entries, will gather at Hangzhou’s Yungu Center on September 22-23 for the competition’s final round.
The contest has attracted more than 14,000 developers from 91 countries and regions since registration opened on July 16.
The four tracks cover multi-agent infrastructure, industry applications, scientific research and embodied AI. The total prize pool is 5 million yuan ($744,815), including a 1 million yuan grand prize.
Beyond cash awards, outstanding projects will receive cloud and token resources, expert mentoring, open-source project hosting and governance support, access to real-world testing scenarios and connections with investors.
A gateway to China’s AI ecosystem
The competition is organized by the Hangzhou Open-source AI Foundation and supported by the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) and LF AI & Data Foundation as global open-source partners.
Zhejiang Lab, Alibaba Cloud and Ant Group are among the institutions jointly hosting the event.

For international developers, the event offers more than a coding competition.
Winners and standout projects could gain access to computing resources from Alibaba Cloud and Ant Group, real-world validation through Zhejiang Lab and connections with Hangzhou investors, potentially lowering the cost of exploring China’s AI market.
The embodied-AI and agent-infrastructure tracks could also create opportunities for developers to connect their projects with the hardware platforms and datasets of Hangzhou-based robotics companies, including Unitree and DEEP Robotics.
From open-source to industry
The decision to hold the finals in Hangzhou comes as the global AI open-source ecosystem becomes increasingly fragmented across technology stacks, developer communities and computing resources.
By combining open-source projects with access to industrial scenarios, hardware, cloud computing and capital, Hangzhou is seeking to make its AI ecosystem more accessible to developers beyond China.
The bigger test lies ahead
The bigger test, however, will be whether GOAI can turn international participation into sustained collaboration — and give overseas developers a practical route into China’s rapidly expanding AI industry.
Otherwise, it will risk becoming just another AI competition — attracting developers for a few days without building the lasting global open-source ecosystem Hangzhou is aiming for.
