Alibaba has upgraded its Qwen AI platform to help businesses move AI agents from experiments into production, expanding the service beyond model access to include agent development, hosting and industry-specific solutions.
Wen Zheng (文征), Alibaba’s senior vice president and president of the MaaS business within its ATH group, announced the upgrade September 22 at the 2026 Apsara Conference in Hangzhou.
He said the platform’s customer base had grown sixfold over the past year as AI agents began moving into core business processes.
Agent Studio
“Businesses no longer need just a model API, but a complete system covering model supply, production operations, agent development and hosting,” Wen said.
The centerpiece of the upgrade is Agent Studio, an enterprise platform for building and running AI agents. It can automatically select models based on the task, keep agents running around the clock, and connect them to a company’s internal knowledge and data as well as external software services.
Alibaba also introduced a faster API mode and new industry solutions, including an AI cockpit for vehicles.
From tokens to results
Wen said the upgrade reflects a broader shift in how enterprises assess AI value, with the focus moving from token consumption to the results AI systems deliver.
For AI agents, that puts greater emphasis on reliability in real-world workflows. A demo may show that an agent can complete a single task, but keeping it reliable across long-running jobs, heavy traffic and multiple software tools remains a challenge.
Alibaba is positioning Qwen AI as infrastructure for that next stage, providing not just access to models but the tools to build, operate and manage agents at scale.
For developers outside China, the move also signals a broader shift in the AI platform market as providers compete to define what an enterprise-ready agent stack should include.
