Alibaba has launched QoderWake 1.0, a digital-employee platform that lets users create an AI worker simply by describing the job they want it to perform.
Released September 8, the product expands its six preset roles during public testing to 10, covering jobs including front-end and back-end development, product management, content operations, data analysis, project administration, UI design and DevOps.
Alibaba says each role incorporates experience from leading industry teams and can take on tasks without additional training.
Integration with digital collaboration platforms
QoderWake connects with digital work collaboration platforms DingTalk, Feishu and WeCom, allowing digital employees to remain in group chats, respond when mentioned and automatically determine task assignments and follow up on work.
Users can also create their own digital employees by defining their responsibilities, workflows and operational boundaries.
The platform is designed with controls for enterprise use: high-risk operations are blocked by default, while sensitive actions require authorization.

Assigning roles to AI agents
The launch reflects a shift in AI-agent development from helping individuals work faster toward assigning AI agents specific roles within an organization.
Products such as GitHub Copilot and Cursor remain primarily focused on individual developers, while Cognition’s Devin has sought to automate broader software-engineering workflows.
QoderWake takes a different approach by embedding agents directly into workplace communication.
Rather than replacing employees outright, the digital workers can operate alongside human colleagues, participating in group discussions and carrying out tasks within defined permissions.
Alibaba Cloud was recognized as a Challenger in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for AI Code Assistants and ranked No. 1 among Asia-Pacific vendors for the third consecutive year.
Meanwhile Alibaba says the Qoder product family has more than 5 million users globally, with enterprise customers accounting for more than 70% of revenue.
The bigger question is how many real-world corporate roles can ultimately be turned into reliable, autonomous digital employees — something that will require more evidence from actual deployments.
